GB3 Championship: Wilson claims maiden podium finish

British driver Leon Wilson earned his first podium in the GB3 Championship with a third-place finish in the weekend’s third and final race at the Red Bull Ring.

Arden’s Wilson always remained in the hunt for a podium finish in the closing stages of the race as he cemented his spot in fifth and, with three minutes remaining on the clock, the Brit was handed a lifeline when Kyuho Lee and Rodrigo Gonzalez – who were second and third at the time – collided further up the road.

That incident promoted Wilson to third on the grid, where he claimed his first top-three finish in GB3, taking his points tally to 82 and moving him up to 16th in the driver standings.

It was a much better afternoon for the Arden driver, who finished last in the second race in Austria after significant track limit penalties plus an additional 30-second time penalty for not performing a drive through during the race.

Elsewhere, it was a frustrating afternoon for fellow British drivers Abbi Pulling and Campbell-Pilling as her race came to an end at turn three in the opening lap as chaos between Maxim Rehm and Lucas Flux saw the former spin and take the two Brits into the barriers and ultimately all three retire from the race.

The Brit duo claimed points in the first two races, though. Pulling finished eighth and sixth while Campbell-Pilling narrowly finished out of the top 10 in the first race but claimed an eighth-place finish in Sunday’s morning race.

As for Deagen Fairclough, he was unable to get away from the formation lap grid, forcing an extra preparation lap, with the Hitech not able to participate in the race.

Fairclough was on the podium earlier in the weekend with a third-place finish in race one, whereas in race two, he crossed the line in 17th after significant track limit penalties ploughed him down from sixth.
