Hat-trick of ATP Challenger singles titles for British players

While all the eyes have been on Wimbledon following Arthur Fery’s fairytale run to the semi-finals, there has been enormous success for British stars on the ATP Challenger tour with three singles titles.

Henry Searle and Jacob Fearnley claimed grass court titles in Nottingham and Newport respectively while Jan Choinski tasted success on a clay court at the Braunschweig Challenger.

Searle – a former Wimbledon boys’ champion – picked up his maiden ATP Challenger singles title in Dublin just a month ago and last week, he made it two singles titles to continue an impressive breakout summer.

The 20-year-old overcame fellow Brits Johannus Monday and Max Basing to secure his spot in the final and take on top seed Clement Chidekh.

Although still in the early stages of his appearance at pro level, the young Brit impressively defeated Chidekh 6-4, 6-4 to round off a fantastic grass court swing.

Across the pond in the US, Fearnley maintained his strong displays during the grass court campaign with a title at the Newport Challenger.

Having made the final at Lexus Ilkley Open earlier this month, the former British number two grabbed his first trophy of the season – his fifth Challenger-level title of his career.

He certainly had to do it the hard way with four three-set matches before saving six match points in the final against fourth seed Adam Walton to come out on top 5-7, 7-6 (8), 6-4.

Whereas in Germany, British number two Jan Choinski secured the 19th singles title of his career by taking the Braunschweig Challenger.

Recently breaking into the top 100 for the first time in his career, where he reached the quarter-finals at the Lexus Eastbourne Open earlier this month, the 30-year-old defeated Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the final 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Having progressed to the second round of Wimbledon, Choinski has now reached a career-high of 75 in the world as he heads in the hard court swing for the final Grand Slam of the year – the US Open.
